January 27, 2006, Newsletter Issue #26: Use the “after 2 hours…” model.

Tip of the Week

Take a serious look at the health risks that cigarettes cause. Then take them to heart – literally and figuratively. One of the biggest reasons people do not stay smoke-free – and one of the biggest misconceptions about smoking – is that they believe the risks associated with cigarettes are irreversible. I’ve smoked for this long, the thinking goes, that I might as well keep smoking.

The newest research on smoking suggests that this kind of thinking is flawed! First, quitting smoking will stop any further damage to your heart, lungs, and other organs. So even if you have smoked and caused harm to your body, there is no need to continue doing it.

Second, when you quit smoking, your body begins to repair itself. It slowly replaces the damaged tissue with healthy tissue, giving you a second chance. The "after 2 hours" model uses this theory. After two hours of not smoking, your blood vessels are no longer constricted. The model continues “after eight hours,” “after one week,” “after one month” and so on until you have no more risk of lung cancer and heart disease than if you have never smoked. Use this model to remind yourself of the continued benefits of not smoking.
