February 3, 2006, Newsletter Issue #27: Throw away all of your lighters.

Tip of the Week

It will be difficult to quit smoking if you still hang on to the paraphernalia. So, as the first step to quitting smoking, it is a good idea to toss those lighters. You can even make a celebration of it. Spend your morning gathering your lighters and then toss them all at once.

If you get rid of the paraphernalia, it will be much more difficult to pick up your old habit because you will have to purchase the supplies to smoke. No one wants a habit that is difficult to maintain or requires a lot of pre-planning, so getting rid of lighters can help. It will also be great if you happen upon a pack with a couple of cigarettes left in it. There will be no alternative but to throw them out if you don’t have any way to light them.

You can apply this theory to ashtrays as well. Toss them with the lighters. If you smoke on a patio or balcony without an ashtray, lock the door to it. That way, you at least have to make an effort to get there. If you make it harder to smoke, it will not be so appealing.
