July 14, 2006, Newsletter Issue #49: How hard is it to stop smoking?

Tip of the Week

Don’t have any illusions about smoking cessation. It is difficult to quit. Very few people are actually successful in their first effort to quit. Instead, most people will try several times before being successful.

The important point is not to get discouraged if you’re not successful in your first effort to quit. Most people don’t start out smoking one to two packs of cigarettes a day. They shouldn’t hope to quit that easily either.

Quitting smoking requires a major commitment – emotionally, physically, and psychologically – making quitting a massive undertaking. It is understandable, then, that quitting smoking is a hard change. Perseverance is the best defense against the discouragement of a failed attempt to stop.
