Don’t try to stop smoking alone! It is best to let everyone who may help you know that you are quitting. Tell your best friend. Tell your girlfriend. Tell your mom. Tell your co-workers if you think they’ll care. Make sure you let everyone know when you will be quitting so that you have people to hold you accountable.
Enlisting a support network helps in a number of ways. For starters, you hold yourself more accountable – assuming you are a generally responsible person – if you have other people who are depending on you. Hyping up your “quit date” will help others to keep you on track. If you’ve identified Monday June 5th as The Day, then others will be more likely to admonish you if they see you smoking on or after that day.
A support network only works as well as you let it, however. Don’t get defensive or angry when people you have enlisted as support tell you to put the cigarette down. Make your boundaries clear. If you only want a gentle reminder, say so. If you are open to your supporters taking the cigs from your hand, let them know to do so no matter how mad you get.
