June 15, 2007, Newsletter Issue #94: Kretek Cigarettes

Tip of the Week

Kretek cigarettes combine shredded clove buds and tobacco together. They are manufactured in Indonesia, where they are popular.

The American Medical Association reviewed the evidence concerning clove cigarettes in 1988 and reached the following conclusions:

- Clove cigarettes are tobacco products. This means that they simply posess all of the harmful ingredients cigarettes have.

- Respiratory tract infections may increase the risk from inhalation of clove cigarette smoke.
